The Wild Parfes Problem
“Goo, goo~”
“Umm, hello.”
“Goo~!”
… As expected, it doesn’t seem to translate monster speech.
Still, it was definitely some kind of greeting, so that’s a relief.
(Contractor. These ones seem to be hungry)
“They’re hungry? Mr. Kouro, wild Parfes live off the grass on the plains, right?”
“Yes, that’s what I’ve heard…”
(It seems the grass on this plain has started to be mixed with poisonous plants, making it inedible. Apparently, the seeds of the toxic grass were brought in from somewhere and took root.)
“Can’t they just pick around and eat the safe ones?”
(They say the toxic ones are hard to distinguish just by sight. You’d have to chew them to tell, and even then, by the time they realize it's poisonous—because of the strong bitterness—they’ve already ingested some of the toxin. It’s not a problem in small amounts, but as the intake increases, the weaker ones start to die off.)
That’s a real problem.
But is there any way to fix it?
“Goomo! Goomo!”
(Apparently, they want to be tamed and taken away from this area for now. The “Chaos Vortex” is still far from here, so it’s not yet a direct threat—but that may just be a matter of time.)
That’s right, monsters are born from the “Chaos Vortex.”
And right after birth, they don’t have much strength.
This really is a serious issue.
“I get what they’re saying, but… shouldn’t this be something for the Seats of the Eight Gods to handle? These guys help out a lot on the Isles of the Eight Gods, right?”
(Logically, yes. But for those living here, it’s an urgent matter—they can’t wait. Contractor, I ask that you tame these ones and help evacuate them for now.)
“Tame them…? I’ve only ever done it with spiders, you know?”
(You should be able to. In your case, “monsters friendly to people” are your likely contract targets.)
“Is that so…? I guess I’ll give it a try. Come here, Parfe.”
“Goo~”
One of the wild Parfes came over to me as I stepped down from the Parfe-drawn cart.
It seemed to know how the taming worked, lowering itself to the ground and pushing out its forehead to make it easy for me to place my hand.
What a well-behaved creature. That helps.
“Alright then, let’s form a contract… Huh? That was fast.”
“Goo! (As expected of my Chief!)”
Oh, I can kind of understand the Parfe’s voice now too.
They even showed me the source of the poisonous grass.
It’s grown mixed in with the normal grass, making it extremely difficult to avoid while grazing.
Kiblinki Saltas tried eating a bit as a test, but said it had a strong bitterness and caused a slight numbness in their mouth, so it’s definitely poisonous.
This whole grassland won’t be usable unless it’s detoxified.
After discussing things with Mr. Kouro, we decided that I would temporarily tame and take the Parfes living in this plain away from here.
In the meantime, we’ll come up with a solution.
I’ve unexpectedly gained some new companions…
I didn’t know I could tame anything besides spiders.
