Proposal Troubles
"Nice to meet you, Young master Cordle. Regarding your proposal, I must respectfully decline."
"Wh-What…"
Young master Cordle dropped to his knees, utterly dejected—but honestly, isn’t that the normal reaction to a sudden rejection?
I don’t think even in this feudal country it’s acceptable to propose to a woman you’ve just met.
Right…?
"Cordle. I told you to keep your greeting a normal one, didn’t I?"
"Th-That’s true… but Mother—"
"Silence! Miss Lily is also a close aide of Marquis Vardmoi! She may be a common-born merchant, but she holds a Silver-rank merchant title, equivalent in status to a head of a count’s house. Judging by how Marquis Vardmoi treats her, she must be highly trusted. Are you trying to ruin our relationship with the Marquis!?"
"Ugh…"
"Enough, leave at once. I’ll handle the follow-up."
"I-I’m sorry, Mother."
With slumped shoulders, Young master Cordle trudged out.
The wives and daughters left behind all had their heads in their hands.
Is he always like that? If so… that's honestly terrifying.
"My apologies, Miss Lily. I shouldn't have let him greet you after all."
"Please don’t worry about it. By the way… is he always like that?"
"… It's hard to admit, but yes, this is typical. Ever since the last turmoil led to the annulment of his engagement, he’s been desperate to find a bride."
I see… So Young master Cordle is also a victim of the kingdom's division.
According to the lady, Young master Cordle’s former fiancée became part of the faction under the king’s younger brother.
Since that group continues to fuel conflict and disturb the peace, marrying into it was no longer an option, and the engagement was called off.
He’s only nineteen, which doesn’t seem like an age to be rushing marriage, but apparently most women of that age already have engagements.
Those who don’t are typically considered to have some flaw—hence his desperation.
"He is quite capable, but ever since the engagement broke off, he’s been like this. We, as part of the former kingdom, are walking an independent path, unaffiliated with any major faction. We must not let a marriage become an excuse to be dragged into war."
This also seems to be why dresses are being made for the young ladies.
Both of them also had their engagements dissolved.
They're seeking new suitors, and the dresses are part of that preparation.
However, skilled designers are no longer in Vinraud, the old royal capital, so sourcing dresses had become difficult.
And then, I conveniently showed up.
Even though they can’t marry until relations across the divided kingdom are normalized, preparations must go on regardless.
Life as a noble is tough.
Meanwhile, I feel quite relieved—because I have no intention of getting married.
What do you think about this chapter?
Thanks for the treat.
To be fair MC should have a longer lifespan (due to being elf at least), and considering how marriages work there in general... yeah it's not a good option for MC.
Thanks for the chapter! Awesome translation! May God bless you!
