Bern's Battle Dress
A few days after finishing Young lady Kou's dress, I was summoned again by Marquis Vardmoi.
This time, it wasn’t for Young lady Kou but for Bern.
Apparently, they wanted me to make her a dress—a serious, battle-ready outfit, so to speak.
Yeah, I’d like to know the reason behind this.

"A tea party... you say?"

"Yes. It’s a gathering of children around Bern’s age. Officially, it’s a tea party, but in reality, it’s a place for the children to learn social skills and scout potential future partners."

"So, it’s like a matchmaking event?"

"To put it bluntly, yes. It’s just the initial stage, though. After the children meet, the families will investigate each other’s backgrounds, status, and whether there are any hidden issues."

Hmm, the marriage affairs of nobles seem complicated.
Still, is it really this early to decide Bern’s engagement? She’s only nine years old.

"In noble engagements, nine years old isn’t considered too young. Some are even betrothed from birth. Both Kou and Bern simply haven’t found suitable matches yet, which is why they’re still unengaged."

"I see. By the way, how’s Young lady Kou doing with her dress?"

"It seems she doesn’t want to embarrass herself. Walking slowly doesn’t come naturally to her, but she’s putting up with it."

Hmm, so it’s working, huh? Anyway, back to Bern’s dress.
What kind of dress would suit her? Should I ask her directly?

"Can I ask little Bern what kind of dress she’d like?"

"She’s in the middle of her lessons right now, so that’s difficult. But I did ask her beforehand. She said she wants a dress that’s 'as beautiful as a flower and as radiant as a rainbow.'"

Hmm, that’s a high standard.
I asked Marquis Vardmoi if it was okay to make such a dress, and he gave the green light.
The reason is that the Vardmoi family is one of the highest-ranking families attending this tea party.
I see, so even dress choices are influenced by family status.
The world of nobility is tough.

"That’s why I want you to use your skills to their fullest. Create the best dress for my daughter."

"... Marquis Vardmoi, are you sure this isn’t partly your own wish?"

"... Kou never wore cute dresses. It’s my wife’s wish too. Please, do your best."

Well, I’m a seamstress, so I’ll do as I’m asked.
But it’s nice to see that even Marquis Vardmoi is just a parent at heart.

Still, a dress "as beautiful as a flower and as radiant as a rainbow," huh?
A normal dress wouldn’t be interesting enough.
It’s not every day I get to make children’s clothing, so I’ll put my heart into it!

radient like a rainbow?
well, i guess iridescence color and neon colors would fit that description perfectly.
and making it as beautiful as a flower is easy, just make a dress that looks like blooming flower.
though making both parts work well together would be a bit harder.

but i'm more surprised she managed to get Kou tamed so well within a single chapter.
looks like embarrassment is the strongest motivator for young girls after all.
though i can already see her encountering some kind of incident where her tomboyish nature makes her forget what dress she is wearing for just a moment too long.

Philip

The younger noble girl is indeed more like a child (or like an apathetic older person), cuz her idea for a dress sounds a lot like "tasty food" or "whatever" when asking a kid what he/she wants from a menu.
Thanks for the chapter! Awesome translation! May God bless you!
