About the Furisode
“Oh, Father, it’s nothing but politics with you. Don’t you have any other topics to talk about?”
As Duke Roberaud and Marquis Vardmoi discussed the future, Duke Roberaud’s daughter interrupted them.
True, it must be boring to talk only about politics even after dinner.
I think it would be fine to move such conversations to a separate room.
“You have a point. Stacia, is there something you want to ask?”
Stacia was the younger daughter of Duke Roberaud.
I hear she’s turning fifteen this year.
She hasn’t married yet because the political situation at her prospective fiancé’s side is unstable, and they aren’t ready to receive her.
“Yes. Lady Lily, how much would that furisode dress of yours cost?”
“The price of the furisode?”
“Yes. It’s such a splendid dress, I imagine it’s expensive, but I’d like to know how much.”
The price of this furisode… I hadn’t really thought about that.
But I used the universal dye more than a hundred times, so that alone pushes the cost over ten million rubies.
The fabric is entirely made of frost spider silk, and not just one or two rolls of it—I used around eight.
Even the inner and under layers, as well as the sash, are all made of Frost Spider Silk.
On top of that, the entire inside is reinforced with Ogre Spider Silk, and it’s all enchanted.
Considering all of that... the price would be...
“… Around one hundred million rubies, I suppose.”
“O-One hundred million?”
“Yes. I’m also a producer of the finest silk, so I used it lavishly. On top of that, I applied enchantments to everything, did embroidery, and used universal dye to finish the coloring. You probably can’t see the differences clearly, but I didn’t just use the dye once—it was applied many times to express subtle variations in color tone. In total, I used it over a hundred times, so I think that estimate is fair.”
Yeah, any way you look at it, that seems like a reasonable price.
And that amount doesn’t even include the design fee.
I only calculated the cost based on market value of materials and the number of days required.
Honestly, it’s not something that can be mass-produced.
And traditional Japanese clothing doesn’t suit everyone either.
“I-I'm amazed. I didn’t expect a single dress to cost that much.”
“I just pursued convenience, preservation, and comfort without much thought, and this is what came out. You could say I poured all of my technical skill into it. If I were to sell it, it would be a simpler version, but even then, to give the embroidery the same elegance, I’d have to do intricate needlework and use the universal dye multiple times. So it probably wouldn’t be that cheap.”
Is it really okay for a mere merchant to be wearing something like this?
It’s clearly more extravagant than what Princess Rodenlight wears.
But Princess Rodenlight has a figure with curves in all the right places, so a kimono might not suit her.
It’s a tricky matter.
I’ll talk it over with her when I get back.
