Debut Party (9)
After the folks from the Isles of the Eight Gods left, I was mulling over how to handle this yearโs welcoming of the Kiblinki Saltas when His Majesty King McFarlane and Princess Rodenlight arrived.
They had a boy with them tooโlooked to be around fifteen or sixteen.
Iโd never seen him before. Who could he be?
โLady Lily. You certainly struck where it hurts most, didnโt you?โ
โPrincess Rodenlight. Oh, you didnโt need to give me that much land, you know?โ
โWe couldnโt very well grant you less. Even now, thereโs a tremendous gap in basic education between those under Marquis Vardmoiโs faction and everyone else. If we allowed only a few regions to establish schools, the disparity between those permitted and those not would become intolerable. As a nation, thatโs something we must avoid.โ
โMarquis Vardmoi told me it was also meant to slow down my activities.โ
โOf course. With your wealth and connections, you can raise buildings and gather staff in no time. But not teachersโthose take longer. In the meantime, weโll intervene as a nation as well.โ
Up to this point, everything was exactly as Marquis Vardmoi predicted.
Veteran nobles really are something else.
โPrincess Rodelight, perhaps thatโs enough talk about education for now.โ
โIndeed. Lady Lily, we truly must apologize.โ
At that, Princess Rodenlight, His Majesty, and the boy all bowed deeply to me.
Well, canโt be helped, really.
โI accept your apology. No one could have predicted it would get that bad.โ
โThatโs trueโฆ I expected heโd say something, but to start shouting the moment he saw youโwell, I never imagined that.โ
โNor I. Where did we go wrong raising that one?โ
Hmm. Honestly, I couldnโt care less about Sharon anymore.
Iโd rather forget about him and move onโlike figuring out how to welcome this yearโs Kiblinki Saltas herd.
โFather, letโs stop talking about Brother Sharon.โ
โYouโre right. Lily, allow me to introduce Taur, who will succeed Sharon as the new Crown Prince.โ
โPleased to meet you, Lady Lily. Iโm Taur McFarlane, fourth son of the royal family.โ
โNice to meet you. Iโm Lily.โ
Heโs supposed to be fifteen, right?
He looks even youngerโฆ hope thatโs not a problem.
โNow then, Lily, I have a favor to ask. I know itโs hard to ask after what Sharon did, butโฆ could you tailor the outfit Taur will wear for his investiture as Crown Prince?โ
โHmm, Lord Taurโs outfit?โ
โI understand if youโre reluctant. But please, hear me out. Iโve already prepared the paymentโupfront, and in kind.โ
โIn kind? What kind of payment?โ
Iโm not easily tempted, but now Iโm curious.
โItโs a rare breed of sheep called the Heavenwool Sheep. Its fine wool can be sheared four times a year. Iโve also brought an expert herder. Iโll gift you one hundred of them. Will that suffice?โ
โIโll do it! Please, let me do it!โ
A rare wool-producing sheep? I canโt pass that upโespecially when I get the sheep themselves!
โโฆ Iโm glad. If youโd refused, it might have been taken as a sign that Lady Lily had cut ties with the McFarlane Kingdom entirely.โ
โHuh? What do you mean, Princess Rodenlight?โ
โThink for yourself a little, will you?โ
โPlum, what does she mean?โ
โโฆ Never mind. Politics is still beyond you, clearly.โ
Ah, so itโs political.
Hereโs what Plum explained to me afterward:
Because Sharon wrecked my promotion party, society at large now sees the McFarlane royal familyโand by extension, the entire kingdomโas being in a state of diplomatic rupture with me.
Even my request for education rights could be interpreted as a veiled threatโlike saying, โIf you keep meddling with me, Iโll make sure future generations grow up to despise your kingdom.โ
No wonder the whole ballroom froze.
All right, that much I can follow.
โIn other words, unless something is done, the McFarlane Dukedom could be facing internal division again.โ
โWell, Iโm just a merchant, you know?โ
โA merchant who controls over half the kingdomโs food supply. What royal family could afford to make an enemy of that?โ
Right. Forgot about that.
So hereโs the plan going forward:
The moment His Majesty and Princess Rodenlight bowed, Lord Sazaby, Lady Kiri, and Lord Riku all saw it.
Meaning, the royal family made a sincere public apology, and I accepted it.
Whether the nobles believe it or not is another matterโbut publicly, the rift is mended.
Next comes the internal display of reconciliation.
Thatโs where I come inโby tailoring the ceremonial outfit for the new Crown Prince, Taur.
โThe outfit worn at a royal investiture carries great meaningโmuch like the one youโre wearing today. Having it made not by a royal tailor, but by you, signifies reconciliation.โ
โI see. So if I refused, it could cause another political disaster.โ
โExactly. So, accept it.โ
โYes, and honestly, Iโm quite interested in that payment.โ
Politics is a pain, but that special wool has my full attention.
Itโs still warm out, so demand for wool is low, but once the weather cools, itโll soar.
โฆ Lately itโs been nothing but Talat silk. Maybe itโs time to try crafting something new.
What do you think about this chapter?
Yay, a herd of sheep๐๐ is coming to Lily.
Thanks.
