Eminira Dungeon (5)
Canal and I hadn’t been able to stop the Armds with earth magic walls or barrier magic like the others.

What should we do?

“Canal, can you do Earth Needles?”

“I can, but they’ll only be about five centimeters.” He replied.

“Can you make a lot of them over a wide area?”

We didn’t know exactly how wide a range he could manage, so we decided to give it a try next time one came rolling our way.

Rumble rumble rumble…

“Canal, Earth Needles!”

“Got it.” Canal said, and when he cast Soil Needle, a 5 cm-tall spread of earth needles appeared about 20 meters ahead of us, covering roughly 5 meters in both directions. Just to be safe, Hamilton created an earthen wall in front of us.

When the rumbling sound stopped, we had him remove the wall to check what had happened. We saw the Armds impaled on the earth needles, sprawled out. Some were still in their rolled-up state, though.
The adults said they’d finish them off, so we left it to them.

“Canal, do you get what happened?” I asked.

“Not really.” He replied.

“So, remember how the knights and Mr. Salem said that rolled-up Armds have a 3 to 5 cm gap? That’s why I asked you to make short earth needles that would hit right in those gaps. If the needles were a bit bigger, maybe they could even finish them off on their own.”

Just then, Allie, who’d been listening, chimed in.

“Hey, do you mind if I try making bigger Ice Needles? I wonder what length would work best.”

Not missing a beat, Hamilton and Kamuela said they wanted to try different earth needle lengths, too.
Since I had no clue which length would work best, I said we should try 5 cm, 7 cm, and 10 cm to compare.

So Allie with her ice magic, and Hamilton and Kamuela with their earth magic, handled the tests. Canal and I just observed on this floor.

“Hardt, if you’d brought your sword, you could’ve helped defeat the Armds. Why didn’t you bring it?”

“I mean… I mostly use magic, and I didn’t know there’d be a floor where we’d be using swords so much. Brother Gerald, if you had told me, I would’ve brought it…”

“You can use a sword?” Canal asked after overhearing me and Brother Gerald talking.
I told him that while I wasn’t as skilled with a sword as I was with magic, I still practiced my swings every day and did sparring matches—mostly person-to-person.

“I want to learn swordsmanship too, but I don’t have anyone to teach me or money to buy a sword...” Canal said.

“Well, once we exchange the loot, you’ll get some money too. You could save up and buy your own sword.” I said.

“If it’s sword training you want, we’ll teach you.” Mr. Salem told Canal. “But no spoiling. We’ll bring you back to the dungeon again, so save up and buy your own sword. When the time comes, we’ll go with you to choose one.”

“Really? I’ll work hard to save up! Thank you so much!” Canal said, bowing his head to the members of Golden Wings.

“It’ll be fine. I’m sure Allie will be heading to the lower floors to test her ice magic anyway, so we’ll go together then.” said Linka.

“Reading my actions before I even say them... Well, you’re right, so I can’t argue.” Allie replied.

“If it fits our schedule, just come along without worrying about it.” said Mr. Gregory.

“Thank you so much.”” Canal said, beaming with joy.

Every time the Armds came, they used ice needles and earth needles of different lengths for the takedown tests. The result? 5 cm was the most effective. The 7 and 10 cm ones were too tall to slip into the gaps.

Hamilton and Kamuela seemed to like it too, saying it was more efficient than using earth walls.

Once it was confirmed that 5 cm was the most effective, Canal joined in with his earth needles—but I couldn’t participate at all and just ended up arriving at the boss room.
