Ominous Movements
When I visited Vice-Commander Bellows with Miracca and reported the matter concerning Miss Lillian, his expression immediately turned grim.
“I thought so… Well, I figured it might be something like that.”
It seemed he had some idea of what might be going on.
I had already heard from Miracca that Wesley, her fiancé, had been acting strange and was currently on leave, but judging by the Vice-Commander’s reaction, there might be more to the story.
“Did something happen with the Glaberson family?”
“Hmm… I can’t say for certain, as I don’t have any solid proof.”
It was rare for Vice-Commander Bellows to speak so vaguely.
Which just goes to show how delicate this matter must be.
But then, he said something unexpected.
“This is something that’s quite relevant to you as well, Justin.”
“M-Me? Really?”
Why am I being brought up in a noble lady’s engagement troubles?
When I glanced over, Miracca was giving me a sharp, cold look.
“Don’t tell me… you and Lillian Glaberson were close?”
“Wha—!? N-No way! I just met her for the first time the other day!”
“I’m kidding.”
Not the time for jokes like that!
… Though, given how the Vice-Commander phrased it, I guess it’s not surprising she’d take it that way.
“Um, I honestly have no idea why I’d be involved in this.”
“Poor wording on my part. I didn’t mean you personally, but rather your post—that is, the Abbott region might be involved.”
“… That’s quite a big leap.”
This is on a whole different level than just me.
But even so… why would the Abbott region be connected?
“There’s talk that the Glaberson family is opposing the Tryon family’s plans for a new mana ore mining site.”
“What!?”
That’s the mine we all just recently investigated—it’s unmistakably within the Abbott region.
So why would the Glaberson family have any objections?
Just as I was about to press for more details, there was a knock at the office door.
“Oh, she’s here. I was about to send for her anyway since I wanted her to be part of this discussion. Saves us the trouble. —Come in.”
“She?”
So someone else was going to join the conversation…
The one who walked in was a female knight I’d met before.
“L-Latasha!?”
“It’s been a while, Justin.”
It was Latasha, who had investigated the mana mines with us.
