Latasha, Once More
“It seems you’re still quite active over there.”

“Active? Not really. There haven’t been any major incidents. Just peaceful days doing patrol duty in the quiet village of Curtis.”

“You’re too modest. I’ve heard quite a few stories, you know?”

Latasha said that, but honestly, I haven’t done anything that makes me feel like shouting, “I did it! I pulled it off!”

I guess that’s just because I tend to compare everything to the kind of work I did in the past.
From the perspective of regular patrol duty, maybe it actually is a lot.

I’d like to talk to some other patrol knights sometime and hear what their days are like.

But setting myself aside, the real point here is Latasha.

She’d once accompanied us on the investigation of the Goethel Mana Mines, located in the Abbott region.
Back then… she reminded me so much of my old self.
Obsessed with promotions, rushing to make achievements, and spectacularly messing things up.

Because I’ve been through it myself, I understand exactly how she felt.
We’re both from commoner backgrounds, and unless we put in double the effort of everyone else, no one would ever acknowledge us.

However, the incident with Hank had begun to shift perceptions within the order.

There’s a growing recognition that selecting people based on lineage alone is flawed.
From now on, the emphasis should be on merit more than ever.

Apparently, more and more voices are saying so.

Of course, if it goes too far in the other direction, that could cause issues of its own… but I’m fully on board with the effort to change old mindsets.
I want more people to get the opportunities they deserve.

—Anyway, enough about the future of the Knights Order. Time to bring the conversation back around.

“So, why are you here?”

“I’m in the same cohort as Wesley—the man you were just talking about. We were in the same unit for a long time, and I’m fully up to speed on his recent behavior.”

I see.
That’s why she was called in.

The Glaberson family is a prominent house in the Magic Corps.
Among this long-established magic lineage, Lillian—who can’t use magic—is engaged to a knight, and it seems something’s been off between the two of them lately.

… Now that I think about it calmly, this is quite a serious issue.
If things go south and turn into a scandal, it could strain relations between the Knights Order and the Magic Corps.

With that concern in mind, the conversation shifted into a briefing from Latasha.

“To get straight to the point—there’s been no suspicious behavior from Wesley.”

Suspicious behavior, huh.
That’s a polite way of saying “cheating”, isn’t it?

In that regard, I don’t think either of them is the type to do something like that.
The issue must lie in something more fundamental…
Or perhaps, on the contrary, it’s just a trivial misunderstanding.
