Peter, the Familiar
A small bird-shaped familiar who could speak human language—Peter.
Judging by the tone of his voice and his name, he was probably male. Apparently, he had just become Vice-Commander Bellows' new familiar as of yesterday.

“Vice-Commander Bellows got a new familiar…?”

It wasn’t at all unusual for knights to make use of familiars. In fact, Vice-Commander Bellows had several familiars already. Peter was the newest addition to that group.

“Why would he suddenly make a new contract with a familiar?”

“He contracted me solely for communication with you two.”

“With us?”

Elina blinked in confusion and stared at Peter.

“Communication… as in, to report on the progress of my relationship with senior in real time or something…?”

“Nah, I’m pretty sure it’s just to stay in touch about that embezzlement case.”

“Thought so.”

Elina replied in a voice utterly devoid of emotion.
I started to wonder if I’d accidentally said something to upset her, but Peter let out a deliberate, theatrical ahem to change the mood before continuing.

“I just explained this to Lady Elina, but the reason for the upcoming ball is to celebrate the sixteenth birthday of Lady Alyssa, the daughter of the McCreed family.”

“Huh? Seriously?”

I didn’t say it aloud, but… honestly, that felt a bit underwhelming.
A parent wanting to throw a grand celebration for their daughter’s birthday was understandable, but it was also clear they were using the opportunity to flaunt their connections to the guests.
The Tryon family was essentially being dragged along for the ride—or worse, being used for someone else’s convenience.

“So basically… they’re just inviting people left and right to gather enough attendees?”

“Well, that would be a reasonable way to interpret it.”

“But if a large crowd gathers at the venue, it still presents an opportunity.”

Most of the attendees would probably be there for the young lady.
And not just to celebrate, but hoping—by some stroke of luck—that they or their sons might catch her favor.
If someone could become engaged to a duke’s daughter, it would open a path to the royal family and be a tremendous advantage.

“True. If it’s for Lady Alyssa McCreed’s birthday, there’s no way the men will stay away… Honestly, I’m not a fan of those political marriages and all that, though.”

“I share your feelings, Lady Elina. But this is one of those tragedies born from the twisted structure of human society… It pains my heart deeply.”

“You talk awfully highbrow for a familiar, huh…”

All of Vice-Commander Bellows' other familiars were combat-oriented, so a type like Peter was rare.
But for something like information transmission, he was probably perfect.

At any rate, I once again left Curtis Village to report in at the mansion.
