Information From Gary
That day, I met up with Gary in the royal capital.
“Now that’s a surprise. You inviting me for a meal?”
“Yeah… You’ve probably already guessed, but—”
“It’s about Wesley, isn’t it?”
As expected of Gary. His quick insight was a big help.
“Actually, it’s become quite the topic inside the Knights Order too. After all, the other party is the daughter of a prominent family that’s supported the Magic Corps… If there are issues with the marriage, unpleasant rumors are bound to spread.”
“Unpleasant rumors? I’d like to hear them.”
“……”
“… Something wrong?”
Gary stared at me blankly halfway through our conversation.
“Nah, just surprised you’d show interest in gossip.”
“Normally I’d brush it off, but this could seriously affect Abbott territory’s future. Right now, I need all the information I can get.”
“You’ve really taken a liking to that place, haven’t you?”
By “that place,” Gary meant Abbott territory.
… Even I was surprised.
When I was first assigned there, I was desperate to get back to the capital as quickly as possible. And now, I was running around trying to protect it.
That place—Abbott territory—had completely changed my view on life.
“It’s a good place. Especially the people.”
“Agreed. Anyway, about the important part… something smells fishy about Wesley’s family.”
“! The Jenkins family, huh…”
Even though Lady Lillian was the one who proposed the marriage, she was now hesitant. It was starting to look like the Jenkins family had a significant hand in this whole mess.
“Social climbing from commoner roots, maybe.”
“Well, if they became in-laws with the Glaberson family, they’d naturally get closer to the McCreeds too. But that alone wouldn’t count as climbing the social ladder, right?”
“What if this marriage is just a stepping stone for something bigger?”
“… I see. Maybe Lady Lillian realized their true intentions for some reason, and that’s why she’s started hesitating. If the engagement gets called off, it’ll be a huge blow to the Glaberson family.”
“That would mean Lowell Glaberson’s scandal might also be tied to this mess in some way.”
The pieces of the puzzle were starting to come together.
At this point… I should try confronting Wesley directly.
