Reunion
For the next several days, Selvan could think of nothing but that piece.
Even when he was doing other things, the melody would suddenly start playing in his head.
He had only heard it once at a banquet, yet it already felt as though it had seeped into his very being.
(This is the first time I've ever felt like this.)
He couldn't even remember the last time something had moved him so deeply.
He had been told to become independent from his family and had spent his days aimlessly searching for himself.
The days passed meaninglessly, and a sense of emptiness had constantly welled up inside him.
But now it was different.
He felt truly alive.
… Then one day.
On a main street in the royal capital, Selvan ran into a familiar face.
"Selvan? It's been a while."
Brown semi-long hair.
Blue eyes.
A woman dressed in an expensive-looking tunic.
"Asha..."
It was Asha.
Asha, the daughter of a certain merchant company, had been his friend since their school days.
Selvan asked,
"It's been a while. What are you doing here? It's unusual to see you in the royal capital."
"Work. I'm in charge of a business."
"A business? Your family's?"
"No. I work for the Maryne Company now."
"The Maryne Company..."
It was a name he heard from time to time.
If he remembered correctly, it was a rapidly growing company.
Selvan frowned suspiciously.
"So instead of your family's company, you're working for someone else's?"
"That's right.... Standing around talking isn't much fun. Let's grab something to eat and talk."
They entered a nearby restaurant.
It was a somewhat upscale establishment.
As they placed their orders, they exchanged updates about their lives.
After Asha finished talking at length about the cosmetics division, Selvan spoke next.
"I'm still looking for work, same as ever."
"I see."
Asha nodded.
She already knew that Selvan was in the middle of searching for his purpose in life.
Selvan continued.
"I couldn't figure out what I wanted to do for the longest time, but lately I feel like I'm starting to see something."
"Really?"
"Yeah. Recently, I heard a piece at a party hosted by an acquaintance. It's called Air on the G String."
At those words, Asha's eyebrow twitched slightly.
Selvan continued.
"Have you ever heard it? When I listened to that piece, it genuinely shocked me. I can't get that melody out of my head."
Asha gave a wry smile.
"I have. More importantly, that's a piece our company president released."
"... What?"
"Air on the G String is being sold by the Maryne Company, where I work. Lady Maryne is the one who brought it into the world."
For a while, Selvan couldn't find any words.
Asha continued.
"Lady Maryne is a genius when it comes to business. If you only succeed once, sometimes luck can carry you there... but succeeding in one venture after another like she has isn't normal."
Selvan tried to organize his thoughts.
But before he could, his mouth moved on its own.
"Could you... introduce me to that company president?"
"Huh? What for?"
For a moment, Selvan fell silent.
What for?
He hadn't thought about it.
And yet...
The answer came naturally.
"I want her to hire me."
Asha's eyes widened.
"... You do?"
"I do."
Silence hung between them for a while.
Asha folded her arms.
"Hmm... well, I can probably arrange a meeting at least."
"That's enough. Could you do that for me?"
Selvan was completely serious.
After a moment, Asha nodded.
"Alright. I'll talk to Lady Maryne first."
"Thank you."
That was all Selvan said.
