Music Shop
A few days later.
As she had declared, Maryne produced the “New Treatise on Notation”.
Its contents systematically compiled the method of writing sheet music.
Methods for indicating pitch.
Symbols for indicating note length.
Ways of writing instructions for dynamics and tempo.
Musical concepts that did not yet exist in this world…
or rather, concepts that had existed but were used ambiguously by musicians, Maryne had organized them.
---
Furthermore, she prepared sheet music based on this notation system.
The piece, of course, was “Air on the G String”.
There were two versions of Air on the G String.
… The first was the original version.
This was the one composed by Bach.
It was what Maryne had been performing in the first half.
… The second was the arranged version.
This was an adaptation of Bach’s original, created by later musicians.
It can be performed using only the violin’s G string.
Therefore, this version is generally what is called Air on the G String.
Maryne decided to include and sell both the original and the arranged versions.
This allowed purchasers of the sheet music to choose whichever they preferred to perform.
---
Of course, to sell the New Treatise on Notation and the sheet music, a store was necessary.
Maryne summoned Rhinos.
“Rhinos. So-and-so, such-and-such.”
“Understood.”
And so Rhinos swiftly purchased a property.
A main street leading to the central square of the royal capital.
A storefront facing that main street.
The signboard bore the name “Maryne’s Music Shop.”
Interior setup.
Securing employees.
Arranging the New Treatise on Notation and the sheet music…
“It’s complete!”
A beautiful music shop had been finished.
Afterward, notices were sent to musicians and nobles…
and the shop opened immediately.
Right after opening, artists and members of the upper class began to visit one after another.
This was partly due to the announcements…
but not only that.
In fact, Princess Sheralnia had been actively spreading word-of-mouth praise about Maryne’s music.
“Lady Maryne’s performance was genius,”
Sheralnia had proclaimed to those around her after the salon.
It was not flattery; Sheralnia genuinely believed it.
“Lady Maryne has opened a new shop and will be selling a book about how to write sheet music, as well as sheet music itself. It will surely be an event that changes the history of music. All artists should pay attention to the music Lady Maryne is selling.”
Sheralnia was a princess who loved the arts.
For that reason, she sensed tremendous potential in Maryne’s music.
Those who agreed with Sheralnia’s word-of-mouth were the salon participants.
For example, a marchioness who had attended the salon said:
“Everything Her Highness Sheralnia says is absolutely true! Lady Maryne’s performance was truly a blissful tone!”
Another duchess said:
“Oh, I wish I could hear that beautiful melody again! I simply cannot get it out of my ears!”
Among the salon participants, there was no one who objected to these words.
If noble ladies of such high rank praised it so highly, then other upper nobles also began to take interest, thinking, “What kind of music is it? I want to hear it too!”
As a result, musicians and court composers in the service of nobles could no longer ignore Maryne’s shop.
Thus, from the very first day of opening, nobles and musicians began purchasing Maryne’s musical products.
