"Getting engaged? To me?”
Hiiro, who had been quietly following my lead, repeated the words in surprise when his name came up.
"Yes. Since Prince Hiiro is not yet engaged, and it’s hard to find someone of suitable status, it would be beneficial for both parties.”
Sanjou Uika said, her face breaking into a truly joyful smile.
"I’m sorry. I am already married. Although it is an informal union due to my wife's frail health and hasn't been publicly announced, we have taken our vows.”
Hiiro said, lifting his left hand to show a ring on his fourth finger. The simple design featured a small, scarlet gemstone that glowed softly.
"What?"
Sanjou Uika stared wide-eyed at the ring, unable to process what she was seeing.
"Well then, we shall take our leave."
After a quick bow, I started to walk away, and Hiiro followed, nodding lightly in acknowledgment.
"W-wait. Please wait."
We reluctantly stopped as she hurried to catch up, nearly grabbing our arms.
"How is that possible? A royal marriage, without an engagement or public announcement? That is unheard of."
"It was a marriage made at the time of my degraded status. There is no issue."
"Prince Akemi has also approved it.”
I interjected, causing Uika to glare at me.
With the fall of the Nijou family, the Sanjou's ambitions were now blatant.
I mentally added this incident to the list of things to report to Akemi.
Leaving Sanjou Uika standing there, speechless, we finally arrived at Akemi's office.
Recognizing me, the attendants discreetly withdrew.
"It’s rare for Hiiro to be with you.”
Akemi said cheerfully. He really likes Hiiro, to the point where I feel a bit envious.
"Saibunmei has entered the operating room."
"So, they’re finally going to manipulate the brain of a living person?"
"Yes."
"Debates were held about whether humans should even meddle in such realms."
"It seems the Empire was more advanced in this aspect due to differing ethical views. They progressed in terrifying ways, creating combat dolls by manipulating human bodies and controlling minds for warfare."
"If they had focused on medical advancements, there might have been scholars studying there for knowledge by now..."
I thought of the ash-covered Imperial Capital. What a waste, I mused.
