Not Garlic, Garigarikuu
“Yes, Young Master. Today’s storage room is this one right here.”
This one right here? What’s that wording? That sounded weird. Heh.
“Well, actually… there are some things stored here that we’ve been wondering if they might somehow be edible. Though we don’t really know if they can be eaten or not.”
“Huh. What kind of things are there?”
Black leaves. Green tubers. Long bright-red roots. A bunch of stuff I didn’t really recognize.
Hmm… plants from another world, maybe
I had no idea.
Huh? Wait. That one, what’s that? That bumpy round shape, with mottled green and yellow patterns.
Could it be… a pumpkin?
“Hey, what’s this?”
“That’s called Bocchan.”
Huh? Pumpkin equals me (Young Master)? What does that mean?
“Hm? Me?”
“No, no, it’s bochan.”
Eh!? I don’t get it.
“Then why is it me?!”
“Hahaha! It’s different, Young Master. See, when you pick it up it’s heavy, right? But if you toss it into water, it floats. When you throw it in, it makes a bochan sound when it hits the water and sinks, but then it pops right back up. Kids think it’s funny, so they toss them into the river to play with them.”
So that’s why it’s called that!
“I see. But how do you eat it? It looks really hard.”
“Well, when we tried cutting it in half, it was full of seeds and there was hardly anything to eat. We tried roasting it, but it wasn’t tasty at all. And when we simmered it, it just melted apart. We even tried drinking that, and it was a little sweet, but it wasn’t tasty at all. Sweet food just feels wrong, you know? Sweet meals are strange.”
Ehh, Gordon, that’s not right.
Pumpkins being sweet is what makes them delicious.
Pumpkin pie, tempura, simmered pumpkin, there are tons of tasty ways to eat it.
Even pumpkin miso soup is great.
“This can be eaten deliciously. Sweet dishes can be tasty too.”
“Really? That’s wonderful! Please teach us how to cook it sometime.”
“Yeah, but we’re missing some ingredients, so I’ll have you make it another time.”
“Understood. I’ll be counting on you.”
“What else is there?”
“Yes, this one looks similar to Nadansousou, but it’s smaller than Nadan, and there are a bunch of them all clumped together. The skin’s a little tough, and if you bite into it, it stinks so bad it’ll twist your nose.”
Wow, Gordon looks like he really hates it. He’s pinching his nose and making a face… but let’s see. My guess is…
“This one right here.”
Oh~ Yes, yes~ Bingo~
Garlic~ Garlic is here~ This is amazing.
This is perfect. It’ll really expand the range of cooking!
Yahoo! Let’s make garlic steak tonight.
“What’s this called?”
“It’s called Garigarikuu. Apparently people from the southern tribes chew on it raw, gari gari. They say the spiciness and smell make them writhe in agony. It stinks, but it’s strangely addictive. Though the next day, anyone who ate it smells so bad that nobody will go near them.”
Yeah, yeah, that’s right.
Garlic definitely smells. The next day you really do smell like garlic.
But man, it’s delicious.
“The Goddess of Ikaruda says it’s tasty.”
“What?! I see. Then please teach us a good way to cook it sometime.”
“Yeah. Prepare some beef. About the size of an adult’s palm, and around three centimeters thick. We’ll use it for dinner tonight. Sebas, could you tell the kitchen staff?”
“Understood, Young Master Kaito. How exciting. Something we’ve never been sure was edible, turns out it not only can be eaten but is delicious. I’ll make the arrangements right away.”
“Yep, thanks.”
Swoosh!
Sebas, as quick as ever.
“Then we’ll use about this much, so take it to the kitchen.”
I had Gordon carry the garlic, called Garigarikuu here.
After that we looked around a bunch more, but there wasn’t anything else that seemed usable. Everything looked different from what I remembered in my previous life, and I had no idea how to use any of it.
What a shame.
“Gordon, do we have any Ikarun? Fresh ones—ones nobody’s touched yet?”
I want to make that thing. Yeah, that one. It has a big impact.
Though people tend to either love it or hate it.
Still… let’s try making it.
“Yes, we just received a fresh shipment earlier.”
“Good, prepare that too. Alright, let’s go make dinner.”
Sebas had already gone ahead to request the steak from the kitchen, and now he returned. Gordon was walking beside him with garlic hanging from both hands.
Together, we left the storage room and headed toward the kitchen.
I can’t wait for dinner tonight~!
