How a Magician Fights
The Jewel Lizard darted around the tunnels freely.
Now that it had made its way up to the ceiling, there was nothing we knights, who fought with swords, could do.
Normally, this would’ve been the end of it—we’d be glad the monster fled.
But for us, letting it get away was the worst-case scenario.

If that Jewel Lizard called in its kin and formed a pack, every last piece of mana ore left in this mine would be devoured.
To prevent that outcome, we had to take it down here and now, no matter what.

We started to pursue the monster—but Amira was quicker.

“I’ll take that monster down with my magic!”

She declared with a huff, puffing her nose proudly.
Her smug expression was reassuring… but to be honest, every single one of us knights looked uneasy.
After all, she’d been terrified of that abandoned village not long ago.

Still, when someone speaks with that much confidence, you start to believe they might really pull it off.
Besides, the distance between us and the Jewel Lizard had grown too wide.
It was a gap we knights couldn’t hope to close—but how exactly did she plan to defeat that monster from here?

“It’s quick on its feet, being a lizard and all… but this should do!”

With surprising dexterity, Amira wielded a magic staff far too large for her small frame.
Before long, the mana enveloping her body began to radiate cold.

Ah, I see.
So she’s going to use ice magic.

A magician I’d worked with in the past often shaped ice into arrows and fired them.
I figured Amira would do the same—
But the scale of her magic was completely different from what ordinary magicians used.

“I’m gonna freeze it solid!”

“““““Huh?”””””

Me, Gary, Elina, and the rest of the knights all let out dumbfounded voices, unable to process what she’d just said.

And then, the scenery around her transformed.

The tunnel walls began freezing over at a rapid pace.
So that’s what she meant by freezing it—
She wasn’t just targeting the fleeing monster. Her spell affected the entire tunnel.

The ice reached the Jewel Lizard, still moving far ahead.
In an instant, it was frozen solid.
It dropped from the ceiling and smashed into the ground, shattering into pieces.

“Wh-what kind of scale is that magic…”

“That little girl… she’s way younger than the students at the Royal Academy…”

“J-just what you’d expect from a magician of House Glaberson…”

Me, Elina, and Gary were all struck dumb with amazement.
And finally, it hit us.

That girl…
is a truly powerful magician.
