The Skilled Magician
At last, the highly skilled magician employed by the ducal family was set to arrive—but even so, we were going about our day as usual.

“Lindel! Shake!”

“Woof!”

“Good boy! Hehe, you’re not just cute, you’re smart too!”

It was such a peaceful morning that Elina had started playing with Lindel. Well, it was hard to blame her—Curtis Village was just that calm today. Even I found myself checking the condition of the vegetables growing steadily in the fields.

Apparently, the magician would first visit the Tryon estate.
It didn’t seem like we’d have much to do in this matter… Still, I’m stationed in this village, so if Lord Doyle requested it, I was prepared to accompany them.

As I was thinking that—

“Master! Please train me!”

The one who showed up was Parker, a boy who lived in the village.

“Parker, huh. You're full of energy today too.”

“Yes, sir! I believe that as someone aspiring to be a knight, I must never lose my spirit!”

Parker gave me a crisp, proper salute—but lately, he’d been acting a little strange.
Not long ago, he was just a mischievous boy his age, but recently he was treating me more like a squad leader giving orders to a new recruit.

I actually asked his father about it the other day, and apparently, the incident in the commercial city of Gracela left quite an impression on him.

He already knew about my abilities from the Demon Wolf incident, but I guess he hadn’t completely believed it until then. Since Reskel and the others had witnessed the Gracela incident firsthand, it gave more credibility to the stories of my strength.

However… it seemed Reskel and the others had really exaggerated things when talking about me. The way Parker was acting was starting to concern me a little.

“Well then, let’s start your training—huh?”

Parker was brimming with enthusiasm, but he suddenly froze as if he’d noticed something.

“What is it?”

“U-uh, over there… there’s a girl…”

“A girl?”

I followed Parker’s gaze—and sure enough, there was a young girl, probably around ten years old. She was holding something that looked like a memo and darting her eyes around as if searching for something. At the very least, she didn’t appear to be one of the village kids.

“There’s no one nearby who looks like a guardian. Did she travel here alone?”

“No way. At her age, that’d be impossible.”

It was hard to say otherwise based on the situation… Still, we couldn’t just ignore someone in the village. Thinking she might feel safer with someone her age around, I took Parker with me and hurried over to the girl.
