“So? You came all the way out to this godsforsaken place just to throw shade at me?”
“Hardly. I need information—from you. About someone in your line of work.”

Schneider’s eyes twitched sharply.
A reaction.
Too many suspects to narrow down, maybe, but something definitely hit a nerve.
“Got anyone in mind?”
“I’ve been neck-deep in that world for years. That whole industry’s full of scumbags, you know.”
He muttered with a disgusted sigh.
Now that I think about it, we’d caught him only after one of his old ‘colleagues’ ratted him out in exchange for a reduced sentence.
“Look, before you get your hopes up—I don’t know where every con artist and crook in the kingdom is holed up.”
“I’m not looking for hideouts. I need intel on a specific merchant.”
“A merchant? Now we’re getting somewhere. You got anything else to help pin ‘em down?”
“This one’s been cozying up to the Glaberson family lately.”
“Glaberson...? That’s a hell of a target. Bold move. Wait a sec... maybe...”
“You thought of someone?”
Just as I thought Schneider might be unusually cooperative, he clammed up.
Time for negotiations, huh?
If he asked for too much, I was ready to walk away and try another lead.
But then he surprised me.
“Normally I’d ask for a reduced sentence or something... but I’m in a good mood today. I’ll give this one for free.”
“You serious?”
“Dead serious.”
What the hell was that supposed to mean?
Was this a trap?
I stayed on guard, but Schneider caught my expression and let out a wry chuckle.
“Yeah, I get it. I’d react the same if our positions were switched. Honestly, before we started talking, I didn’t plan to tell you anything—no matter what you offered me. But now… I don’t know. Feels like I can actually talk to you.”
There wasn’t a trace of deceit in his eyes.
He was speaking from the heart.
That much, I could tell.
“I appreciate it, Schneider.”
“Can’t believe I’m hearing that from you... Anyway, you’d better brace yourself. The info I’m about to give you? It’s about the dark underbelly of the Glaberson family.”
