Complicating Matters
The mysterious merchant Amira had seen—
It’s safe to assume now that he’s involved in all this.
There isn’t much time left before Lillian and Wesley’s wedding.
I need to get to the bottom of this before then.
The next day, I went to report the newly discovered information to Lord Doyle.
Lady Alyssa was absent that day.
“A merchant, huh…? The timing alone makes it suspicious.”
“We don’t yet know what exactly they’re up to.”
“And yet, sending Amira back to her family to dig for more information isn’t an option—is that what you’re thinking?”
“Exactly.”
He saw right through me.
Honestly, it would be the quickest way to get results… but doing that might end up hurting Amira deeply.
She’s still just a child.
The very picture of innocence.
I can’t bear to be the one who clouds that smile of hers.
That said, I have no intention of standing by and doing nothing either.
I will take action. I will find a way to break through this wall.
… Or, at least, I want to sound that determined. But in reality, there are just so many obstacles stacked against us.
Still, there’s one bit of hope.
The plan to build a new town near the mana mines has everyone in Curtis Village fired up.
Some say their grandparents used to live there back when it flourished—there’s a strong emotional attachment.
I don’t want to dampen that enthusiasm.
More importantly, this is a golden opportunity to finally revitalize the long-struggling finances of the Abbott region.
Whatever the Glaberson family’s agenda may be, I can’t allow them to sabotage this.
“Lord Doyle… about this matter—may I continue investigating a bit longer?”
“I don’t mind. Do you have any leads?”
“Yes. I plan to reach out to an old acquaintance.”
Honestly, this is someone I’d rather not see again.
But… I don’t have the luxury of choosing my allies right now.
