The Lingering Suspicion
After returning to Curtis Village, we resumed our usual daily routine.
Not long after the investigation in Gracela concluded, Miracca came to report the results… but in the end, they couldn’t determine where the vigilante members had disappeared to.
Still, the Knights Order took the situation seriously and decided to send a reinforcement unit immediately.
If that area stopped functioning, the economic loss would be immeasurable.
Even if it meant leaving a hole elsewhere, they must have deemed it necessary to allocate forces there.
“Leaving a hole elsewhere, huh…”
That part caught my attention.
From the Knights’ perspective, to be honest, they wouldn’t want to reassign forces from anywhere.
They can’t predict when or where an enemy might attack.
But leaving Gracela unattended was not an option.
In that case, they’d send knights from areas where diverting some strength wouldn’t be too much of a problem.
“In that case…”
I turned my gaze to the map pinned on the station wall.
“They can’t take any from the royal capital or the border regions. Even in an emergency, they need to buy time to reestablish defenses. So, the area must be somewhere that gives the Order a geographical advantage… here.”
The spot I focused on was the Yald Gorge.
It was a single road leading from the border straight to the royal capital, and all baggage and such had to be inspected there.
However, since travelers had already passed one of the strictest border checks, I heard the number of personnel stationed there wasn’t that high.
Reports in the past didn’t show any instances where the situation escalated into a battle.
Still, it’s unsettling to assume nothing will happen this time either.
“I don’t have any solid evidence, so I can’t bring this up to the Order… what should I do?”
“In that case, why don’t you go check it out yourself, Senior?”
“Me?”
At some point, Elina had returned from patrol and was now standing in the station.
By the way, Amira was currently playing in the river with the village children, full of energy.
“I’ve been thinking the same thing… For such a big commotion to happen in a city like that, and the only result being that the vigilante members disappeared—well, that alone is a serious incident, but it still feels disproportionate to the scale of what happened.”
“You thought so too?”
It seemed Elina and I shared the same doubts.
… Just in case, maybe I should leave Curtis Village to Elina and Amira and head to the Yald Gorge myself.
