The Next Step
With the matter of the Goethel Mines finally taking shape, Gary and the rest of the knights returned to the royal capital to take on their next assignment.
“Let’s grab a drink sometime soon.”
“Yeah, sounds good.”
In the past, I would've returned to the capital with them. But now, my workplace is here in the Abbott region. Sure, the taverns in the capital offer a variety of drinks from all over the land, but honestly, I don’t find that very appealing anymore.
These days, I’d rather enjoy a glass of milk after finishing some farm work.
Since moving out here, I’ve become a lot more health-conscious.
After seeing Gary and the others off, Elina and I returned to the local station—but this time, we weren’t alone.
“So this is the Curtis Village station!”
Excitedly looking around with flaring nostrils was none other than the brilliant young magician recognized by the ducal family: Miss Amira.
As for why she’s here… well, that’s because a rather complicated situation has arisen.
The cause of it all was the barrier magic used to protect the Goethel Mines.
To maintain it stably, the caster apparently has to stay relatively close and check on it regularly. Once it settles, that won’t be necessary anymore—but there's no real estimate for when that might be.
This was the first I’d heard of such a thing, but according to Amira, the scale turned out much larger than expected, making it difficult to maintain.
Because of that, she sent a familiar to the McCreed family to ask for instructions—and the reply she received was unexpectedly casual: “Then why don’t you just live over there?”
It seems the McCreed family is now interested in the mana ore being mined from the mountain as a new economic activity hub. They probably want to lock it down before anyone else gets wind of it. In reality, the fact that the mountain holds mana ore vein still isn’t widely known.
So, Amira decided to live at our station for the time being, at least until the barrier stabilizes.
Apparently, this was her own request.
She grew especially close to Elina during the last mission.
And Elina has been treating her like a real little sister.
… Back in the day, I would’ve looked down on mixing personal feelings with duty.
But now, I actually find it heartwarming.
Everything’s changed.
Not just me—this whole Abbott region is transforming around the young Lord Doyle.
If I can help with that even a little… no, let me help.
This place has already become like a second home to me.
