End of the Interview
“Ah... I also heard about the New Treatise on Notation through word of mouth. Spreading knowledge of how to write sheet music among musicians would normally be considered undesirable. A technique like that would be better monopolized. But I tried thinking about why you chose to reveal it instead of keeping it to yourself. I’m not confident my guess is correct, but...”
“That’s quite alright. Please tell me.”
“... If knowledge of musical notation spreads, musicians will create many outstanding masterpieces, and in the long run that will help develop the music market as a whole. If the market grows, demand for all kinds of music-related products will increase as well. And in the end, that would raise the Maryne Company's sales too... perhaps?”
Maryne was impressed.
(This man... has an eye for long-term business.)
Rather than fixating on short-term profits, he understood the concept of generating profits over the long term through sustainable business practices.
More importantly, he possessed the perspective to think about the market as a whole.
(And on top of that, he has a sensitivity to art. People like this are rare.)
That was what Maryne thought.
People who excelled at logic often lacked emotional depth...
But Selvan also possessed the rich sensibilities needed to be genuinely moved by art.
“Mr. Selvan.”
Maryne's voice became more formal.
“I would like to hire you.”
“Really!?”
“Yes. And while it would be on a provisional basis, I would like to entrust you with the position of leader of our arts division.”
“Leader...”
Maryne explained.
“Art encompasses far more than just music. I intend to expand into a wide variety of art-related businesses. Air on the G String is merely the beginning.”
“I see.”
“After listening to you just now, I came to a conclusion, you possess both a sensitivity to art and a sophisticated understanding of business. I believe you are well suited to lead this venture.”
Selvan's eyes lit up.
Then he asked:
“Is it really alright to make me a leader right away?”
“As I said, this is only a provisional appointment. If I determine that you are suitable, I will make it permanent… If you dislike the arrangement, I can approach someone else instead.”
“I don't dislike it. If you'll have me, I'd be honored to do it.”
Selvan spoke with a face full of enthusiasm.
Maryne nodded in satisfaction.
“Then I shall appoint you as the provisional leader. As for the details of the business itself, I will explain them properly at a later date.”
“I look forward to working with you.”
Selvan replied.
At that moment, Asha offered her congratulations.
“Good for you, Selvan. You finally found a place to work.”
“Yeah. Asha, this is all thanks to you. Thank you.”
“Don't worry about it. More importantly, make sure you earn that permanent position.”
Asha smiled.
Selvan shrugged and smiled back.
And so, Selvan became the provisional leader of the Maryne Company's arts division.
