Daily Training
I’m Vio, five years old, working hard on subjugation requests as a Bronze-rank adventurer, without really interacting with other adventurers. I heard that Bronze-rank adventurers train at the training grounds on weekends, so I asked whether I could join… but both Dad and the Vice-Guildmaster told me to stay away.
Apparently, Bronze rank is where people of *that age* tend to gather, and it’s not exactly the best crowd.
You know… the ones who pull the “classic guild troublemaker” stuff.
People who actually have the ability to rise from Bronze to Silver, like Kathe’s older brother, quickly rack up herb gathering and subjugation points and move up.
Gars stayed Bronze for so long because his little sister Kathe was too cute and he basically became a shut-in.
The troublemaker types tend to be the ones obsessed only with subjugation.
The “Being an adventurer means subjugation! I’m OP!” types.
People like that end up doing everything their own way no matter what, and even when they do subjugate monsters, they often ruin the materials.
Of course, they don’t bother with things like herb gathering, so they don’t accumulate points. It turns into a vicious cycle, and they end up going into dungeons, getting seriously injured, or not coming back at all.
Apparently, this village has very few of those types, but not zero.
And those people get “educational guidance” at the training grounds on weekends… which means if someone who looks like a five-year-old, me, goes there, I’d definitely get picked on.
On the other hand, the serious adventurers who train on weekdays are the kind who can quickly reach Silver rank, so there’s no need to reserve the place.
Yeah… I’ll pass.
Even if I got dragged into some accidental trouble, I’d probably still enjoy it, but I’m not battle-crazy enough to walk into a place knowing I’ll get harassed from the start.
So unfortunately, I didn’t get to train with other adventurers. Instead, the Vice-Guildmaster came out to the back forest to train magic with me.
“Vice-Guildmaster, is there a spell that lets you talk to someone far away?”
“You mean communication magic? I’ve heard it exists as a wind-attribute spell, but I can’t use it myself. Apparently, many elves can…”
When I go into the forest with Dad, he uses Silent so our voices can’t be heard, but if we get too far apart, it doesn’t work anymore. I thought communication magic would be really useful, but… only elves can use it?
“I’ll ask Professor Doua next year.”
“I’d like to learn it too, so let’s study it together next year!”
Looks like the Vice-Guildmaster wants to use it too. It’d definitely be useful if we could.
Apparently, sea folk have communication magic through water magic… I wonder if that’s like how dolphins communicate underwater? Since I’m human, wind magic would probably be easier to use.
“That method of shrinking your [Fireball] seems very practical. Fire magic is highly effective for subjugating monsters, but it often ruins materials, making it difficult to use efficiently.
However, your method minimizes damage while actually increasing offensive power.
That said, it has the drawback that without precise mana control, the attack won’t hit.”
That’s true. If a Fireball is big, even with bad aim it might still graze the target, but with something this small, you need the kind of control it takes to hit a triple 20 in darts.
Dad’s been practicing doing the same thing with earth magic using [Earth Ball].
The Vice-Guildmaster said they’d practice with [Water Ball] too. Even someone that skilled at magic still wants to keep training, that’s pretty amazing.
Definitely not just a magic nerd.
On Wind Day, the Guildmaster and the Vice-Guildmaster come by for special magic training, and on Holy Day, we hold the children’s herb-gathering experience every other week.
On Wood Day and Earth Day, I head to the forest to take on standing subjugation requests. On Fire Day and Water Day mornings, I study on the second floor of the guild. And on Water Day afternoons, I train with Kathe and the others.
Mimy teaches me history, and the receptionists at the guild, including Taki, teach me the knowledge I need as an adventurer.
Sometimes Professor Paul stops by and teaches me how to read the kind of materials the sheep triplets studied from.
I’ve come to understand that the academy is really just a place to learn how to read and to cover the basics so you won’t struggle once you become an adventurer.
Well, considering there are plenty of places where you don’t even get that much, it’s still pretty amazing.
The notebooks Dad bought me keep piling up more and more ever since these study sessions in the archive room started.
“Vio, you really pick things up fast. Even with difficult words, you make sure you understand their meaning before moving on, right? You absorb everything so quickly, it’s actually fun to teach you. Just don’t push yourself too hard, okay?”
The adults say things like that while bringing me new materials to teach, so of course it makes me want to try harder.
Maybe it’s because I’m in a five-year-old’s body, or maybe Violet’s natural ability is just that good, but I can learn things so smoothly, and that makes it fun. It’s definitely fueling my thirst for knowledge.
Dad studies with me sometimes too, but he’s not great with history or paperwork. Whenever that starts, he switches to reading monster encyclopedias and distribution maps, looking for the next place we should go.
I can already handle Horned Rabbits and wolves in the shallow forest, and even the Gray Wolves a bit deeper in without any problems.
Apparently, if we go further in, there are Black Wolves, but since they can be pretty tough in groups, Dad’s been adjusting things so we don’t go that deep.
I wonder where we’ll go next?
