I Turned Ten
My birthday is here.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to ME~ Congrats, me.
As always after breakfast, I’ve been confined to my room again this year... Even if I see the decorations and act surprised like it's the first time, Sarah still gets mad and says, "That’s not the point!"...
If I had a TV or a recorder, I wouldn’t complain even if I were confined, you know~ I’m so bored...
.. .Come to think of it, I haven’t done a self-search since my sixth birthday~ I’m bored, so maybe I’ll give it a go~
Looking at my hand, I activated Search.

Oof...
20s... But I passed away at 82? Seriously!?
Uh, I was in my 60s at six, so that means I’m getting ten years younger for every year I grow up? That’s crazy cheat-level...
Oh, so the contracted ones show up too~
Come to think of it, the last time I searched Pearl was when I picked her up, so that was four years ago~ She’s fully grown now, and a lot’s changed since then, hasn’t it?
“Pearl, can I use Search on you?”
Pearl was asleep in the corner of the room on a cushion made just for her.
“Hmm? Search? Of course, go ahead.”
“Thanks. Search.”

“Whaaaaaat!?”
“!? What is it?”
Pearl, who had been dozing off again, sprang up at my voice in surprise.
“Pearl, you had attributes!?”
“Ah—yeah. I never use them, so I forgot.”
“You forgot...?”
Knock knock knock. “Young lady Joan, is something the matter?”
Sarah must’ve heard me and came to check.
“Ah—no, it’s fine… Oh, Sarah?”
Click. “Excuse me. Do you need anything?”
“Yes. Could you ask if Father and the others have time? I want to talk to them.”
“Understood.”

When I went to the living room at the time Father told me, there was Father, Mother, Grandfather, Grandmother, my older brothers, and—at some point—Aunt Julie, Uncle Gil, and Vee had also arrived. The twins were apparently napping. Brother Aran couldn’t make it because of work. Well, he is part of the royal guard~
“It’s been a while, Big sister Julie, Big brother Gil. When did you arrive?”
“It’s been a while, Joan. We just got here. Was it four years ago the last time we saw each other? You’ve grown so much—and even cuter too.”
“Yeah, yeah. You really have gotten cuter. Things were hectic after that, and we couldn’t even visit over New Year’s.”
“That sounds rough… It’s been a while since I’ve seen your face too, Vee. Though we did exchange letters.”
“Yeah, that’s right. I run into Noel and Gene at the academy sometimes though… Still tiny as ever, huh.”
“Ugh. I have grown, but Vee, you’ve just gotten too big!”
“So, Joan, I heard you had something to talk about?”
Once everyone was seated and Grey, Nancy, and Sarah had brought out the tea, Father got straight to the point.
“Yes… Um…”
I was unsure how to begin, when—
“Joan, it’s okay. Take your time.”
Grandmother said kindly, nodding at me.
“Well… I wanted to talk about something I haven’t told you all yet regarding my past life… And also… about Pearl…”
“Your past life…”
“Yes. First of all… this is something I haven’t told anyone, but… I passed away in my previous life at the age of… 82.”
““Eh!? Eighty…two!?””
Brother Gene and Vee both gasped in shock.
“Jo… how did you die? Was it illness?”
Brother Noel asked.
“Well, I’d caught a cold and was bedridden… Then I went to sleep at night and just didn’t wake up… I think it was probably old age as well.”
“You said you had a family, right?”
“Yes. I lived with my son, his wife, and their children. Since my son and his wife both worked, I stayed home and took care of the cooking, cleaning, and laundry.”
“That explains why you know so much about cleaning and cooking.”
“I honestly thought you used to be a professional chef.”
Brother Noel and Brother Gene both chimed in.
“When I was working, I was something like a magic tool sales rep, I guess. But I always liked cooking—eating it and making it.”
“What about all those lunch bags and the stretchy knitting projects you’ve made until now?”
Mother asked.
“I liked handicrafts too. Knitting, embroidery, sewing—I did a bit of everything. After I gave birth, I quit my sales job, so I had plenty of free time.”
“Ahaha, I see. That explains everything.”
“Um, what about those wrestling moves?”
Brother Gene asked.
“Ah—that was because my husband in my past life liked martial arts. We used to go watch matches together.”
“What’s that? Wrestling?”
Vee asked, eyes sparkling with curiosity.
“Ahh… You’ll get it if you train with Jo.”
“Ooh, then Joan, let’s do that later.”
“Hey, Vince, did you forget why we’re here?”
“Ah—sorry.”
Aunt Julie reminded him, and he seemed to remember.
“And then… about the Queen…”
“Hm? What about the Queen?”
Father asked, looking puzzled.
“I knew the Queen in my previous life… She was the daughter of my best friend.”
“““““““Eh!?”””””””
“But the Queen’s older than you, right?”
“Isn’t she about the same age as Mother?”
“She probably passed away before I did. She told me herself it was from overwork.”
““Overwork death…””
Father and Uncle Gil muttered under their breath, apparently relating all too well.
Both of them seriously overwork themselves…
I really hope they start taking better care of themselves.
