Sidestory: Grandchildren
The story is about the protagonist's grandchildren after she dies in her past life.
—A certain day in April
It’s been three months since my beloved grandmother passed away.
She was so full of energy.
Just a while ago, she was smiling and watching the new music video of her favorite song.
But then, she caught a cold that worsened, and for a week, my 82-year-old grandmother was confined to her bed.
We had been watching the online release of the new music video together, squealing over our favorite member.
When it was my turn to bathe and I left her room…
"Make sure you warm up properly~ Don’t take a quick bath, or you’ll catch a cold~"
"That’s you, Obaachan~"
"Ahaha. Ding, ding, ding! Correct~ Alright, Raika. While you are in the bath, I’m going to watch Kazu one more time."
As she started playing the music video again, I headed to the bath.
---30 minutes later
"Obaachan, want to eat some ice cream I got for you?"
In bed, she was smiling peacefully in her sleep.
"Fell asleep? Maybe she’s meeting Kazu in her dreams. Goodnight, Obaachan. Sweet dreams."
---The next morning, Obaachan didn’t wake up.
"Obaachan, the cherry blossoms you love are in full bloom. Guess what? I became a university student today! I got accepted into my dream school. I’m heading out now."
I loved my grandma.
Even when my friends teased me about being a "grandma’s kid," I didn’t mind at all.
Going shopping with her, watching comedy shows and martial arts together, playing games and hunting monsters—it was all fun, and I loved every moment of it.
Then, my Baachan passed away.
She died while I was away, taking an overnight trip for the entrance exam at a prestigious soccer school I wanted to attend.
"Baachan, I got into the school I wanted! It’s a boarding school, so I’ll be moving in next week. I’m going to work hard and become a starter!"
Baachan’s favorite sayings were:
"It’s better to regret doing something than to regret not doing it."
"And everything will work out in the end."
That’s why I insisted on taking the entrance exam, even though my teachers said it was a long shot. I bowed my head and asked for the chance. I’m so glad I got in.
Kaasan was the most worried about the boarding school.
She thought I’d never wake up on my own because she had to drag me out of bed every morning during elementary and junior high school.
But Baachan told her:
"If Ruta wants to go to that school, he’ll manage. Even if it’s boarding school, he’ll do just fine. Everything will work out."
Thanks to Baachan’s words, Kaasan gave her permission.
I’m so grateful to her.
"And Baachan, remember that game we played together? I made it into the top 20 in a ranking event! And guess what? They’re making a movie adaptation of it overseas! Top players get tickets to a private screening. The monsters are full CGI, and they look so real. I wish I could’ve watched it with you."
"Ruta, time to go shopping! Come downstairs!"
Kaasan’s calling me.
"Coming! I’m getting new spikes as a reward for getting in. See you, Baachan."
[Beep-beep-beep. Charging complete.]
"I’m home~ Taro-chan! Guess what? Niko drew a picture of Obaachan at school today! Look, isn’t it good?"
[Beep-boop]"Ehehe. Even the teacher praised it! Obaachan’s smiling, and the flowers around her are so pretty. These flowers? They’re gerberas, Obaachan’s favorite."
[Beep-boop-beep.]"Do you think Obaachan will like it?"
[Beep-beep-beep. Commencing cleaning.]"Taro-chan, have a good trip!"
[Beep-beep-boop.]What do you think about this chapter?
