Half a Year Since the Miso Bees, The Miso Is Complete
I turned four!
Apparently the Kai Chair was still selling like crazy.
People said things like it helped families spend time together, or that being able to communicate with their kids at the table brought more smiles to the family. Sounds like it was pretty popular.
Anyway, today was finally the day for the miso to make its debut.
It had been a little over half a year since we got the miso from the miso bees. Man, that was a long wait.
When we first brought the miso bees back, the color still seemed kind of light to me.
It was brown, sure, but it looked unfinished.
Back in my previous life, I’d read that miso didn’t smell much when you first started making it. But that miso from the bees had definitely had some kind of smell.
Also, Papa and the others kept hesitating, so we never really had a chance to try eating it. That’s another reason so much time passed.
Anyway, anyway… the point is, I wanted them to know how delicious miso is. And the quickest way to understand how good something tastes is to just try eating it, right?
Also, I felt like the miso from those miso bees probably hadn’t been aged enough. As it matures, the color gradually deepens from brown to a darker shade.
And now? I think it looks just right.
But it’s kind of strange. As it matured, the smell seemed to change too.
I checked on it every three days for half a year. My nose probably got too used to the smell, so I didn’t really notice the difference. But Marle, who came to check it with me again after a while, seemed to notice the change.
“Hm? Young Master Kaito, that thing called miso we got from the miso bees… doesn’t it smell less like poop now? It’s still a bit noticeable, but not enough to pinch your nose anymore.”
Don’t call it a poop smell! It’s miso!
Wait, it really smells less now? Is that true?
“Maybe I just got used to it, so I’m not sure. But now that you mention it… yeah, the smell’s changed. It’s lighter now. And it smells really delicious.”
Sniff, sniff. Deep breaths.
Finally. Finally.
I was so happy~ ah, crap, I was so happy I started tearing up.
“Hm? Young master, why are you crying?”
“I’m just excited. I guess my emotions kind of spiked.”
“Is that so? If Young Master Kaito has been looking forward to it this much, then I suppose I’ve grown a little curious myself.”
Exactly. Curiosity is important.
It’s way better to regret something after trying it than to regret never trying it at all.
“Just try tasting it first, okay? It’s a recommendation of the Goddess of Ikaruda, after all.”
The miso was ready.
Alright! Time to make the long-awaited miso soup!
“The miso’s ready, so let’s go see Gordon!”
“Yes, yes, young master. No need to rush, Gordon is already waiting in the kitchen. See? If you run, you might trip and get hurt.”
“It’s fine! If I fall and get hurt, Mama will heal me!”
“That won’t do. We mustn’t ask your mother to use magic recklessly. Healing magic is precious.”
“And if you fall, Young Master Kaito’s precious body would be injured. It would hurt. And you might drop that miso you treasure so much. That would be sad, wouldn’t it?”
That’s true.
If I fell, it would hurt. And if I spilled the miso, it would be ruined. That would be impossible to accept.
I’d waited half a year for this. Actually, I’d waited four whole years since being born. Dropping it and ruining it now? No way.
“Okay, Marle. I won’t run.”
My excitement made me impatient.
But if I couldn’t trip, then I had to be careful. Holding the miso tightly in my arms, I took one step… then another… heading toward the kitchen.
“Gordon, you here?”
