A Book Only I Can Read
The day after I ran out of mana. I had Marle read me the rest of the book again.
I can actually read it myself, but at my age, there’s no way I’m supposed to be able to read yet.
She took the book from the shelf and held it out in front of me.
Huh? No way. Huh?!
Marle misunderstood my shock.
“It’s a lovely design, isn’t it? It looks like some kind of writing from somewhere, but I can’t quite tell what it says. And this design, no one’s been able to copy it.”
“Pweetty,” I said with a big grin, pretending to stare at the cover in admiration.
What do you mean, design? It’s Japanese!
Seriously?
(This is not a story. It is the truth. To the one who knows the meaning of these characters, I shall bestow riches. To those who do not, these characters are nothing more than decoration. It is a truth that can only be known by the chosen one. Oh chosen one, read the other message hidden on the back.)
I immediately flipped the book over.
There was another message written there in Japanese. A message meant for none other than the chosen one… me.
I couldn’t contain my excitement.
There was another reincarnator besides me.
There was a Japanese person in this world!
“Young Master Kaito, you must really like this design.”
“Yeah!”
All right, let’s keep reading. What’s next, what’s next?
(Oh chosen one, go to the elven village and speak to the elven chief. Say to them:
“I know you. Do you know me?”
The chief will surely reply, “Of course I don’t.”
If that happens, then say this:)
(“I am the chosen one. You would do well to tell me. The birthplace of the napple fruit, and when and where the napple comes to be. Share your knowledge.”)
(If even then you are told, “No,” then, chosen one, say this to the elven chief:)
(“No, no... so that basically means yes!”)
Hold on, hold on, whoever wrote this book! I was reading that seriously, you know! What’s with that last line, “No, no... so that basically means yes!”?!
This is stupid. Way too stupid. Seriously?
But still. This message was written in Japanese. Only I, a reincarnator, could read it.
If there had been another reincarnator besides me, pineapple would’ve spread much more widely in this world. It would’ve been so much easier to get.
I thought it was called pineapple, but apparently in this world it’s called napple. There’s even a drawing in the book, pretty terrible, but you can tell it’s supposed to be a pineapple.
In my previous life, if you ate too much pineapple, your tongue would start to tingle. Seems like that hasn’t changed in this life.
Only, the napple here was incredibly sour. You could barely taste any sweetness at all.
With the way I am now, I took one bite, and the sheer sourness made my consciousness trip right back to the moment I read that napple book.
But that sourness lingered in my mouth forever.
What do you think about this chapter?
