The Blacksmith’s Awakening and the Village Leader’s Struggle
The powerful declaration by the dwarven blacksmith elder, Dolgan—“I can smelt iron!”—sent waves of excitement and hope throughout Akio’s new village. The “iron” that Akio had dreamed of for so long was finally on the verge of becoming reality.
From the very next day, Dolgan threw himself into action with vigor. He began by sorting the iron ore-like stones Akio had collected, examining their properties in detail. After reassessing the quality of Akio’s fire-resistant bricks and charcoal, he nodded in satisfaction.
“Hm, these will do just fine. First, we’ll need a millstone to crush this ore efficiently, crucibles that can withstand high temperatures, and most of all, a powerful bellows to feed air into the fire.”
He then used sticks to sketch a blueprint of the smelting furnace on the ground, passionately explaining its structure and the necessary materials. He was a far cry from a retired craftsman—he looked completely alive.
Akio was deeply impressed by Dolgan’s knowledge and experience and decided to fully entrust the furnace’s construction to him. Alto and Kenta listened with shining eyes, already acting like Dolgan’s “first apprentices” as they eagerly set about crafting tools and gathering materials. Sylvia also offered to help, saying she could search for herbs used in elven lore—like those that boost a furnace’s heat or purify metal.
With the grand iron-smelting project underway under Dolgan’s lead, Akio, as the de facto village leader, felt anew the urgency of other vital matters: food security and the construction of permanent housing for the increasing population.
“Everyone, listen. Iron-making is important, but we also need to build a solid foundation for our daily lives. Winter is coming. We need food storage and homes where everyone can sleep safely.”
His words earned solemn nods from the refugees and even the children.
Akio proposed broad task divisions:
- A food team, led by Ayane and Kina, to manage fields, forage in the forest, and handle hunting and trap-setting.
- A construction team, under Akio’s direction and assisted by Sylvia and Alto, focusing on urgently building housing for the refugees.
- And the ironwork preparation team, led by Dolgan.
Meanwhile, Celestina and Leonora, who had been recuperating in the annex, slowly began seeking ways they could contribute. Though not yet at full strength, Leonora took charge of light patrols around the village and offered to teach Alto and Kenta the basics of hand-to-hand combat for self-defense. Her dignified presence and precise instruction quickly made her a figure of admiration among the boys.
Celestina, though still physically fragile, helped Ayane care for the children—especially those who had lost family and fallen into despair. She taught them letters and recited stories from her homeland, gently soothing their hearts. Her poise and soft voice comforted the children and greatly lightened Ayane’s burden.
“Celstina-sama’s stories are so fascinating. The children listen with shining eyes,” Ayane said with a smile.
“… This is all I can do right now,” Celestina replied with a delicate smile, yet a quiet sense of purpose glimmered in her eyes.
While keeping an eye on their gentle transformation, Akio immersed himself in construction. Using timber hauled in by handcart and a stockpile of regular bricks (not fire-resistant ones), he began building longhouses that could shelter people from rain and snow. The design was simple but accounted for winter cold—insulated walls stuffed with dried moss and grass, and raised flooring to keep out moisture.
Sylvia offered sound advice on the best woods for construction and how to position the buildings in harmony with the forest—considering wind direction and sunlight. She even used certain herbs to treat the wood against rot.
Dolgan groaned over furnace designs, the children scouted the forest for new ingredients and materials, and Akio’s team echoed hammer strikes throughout the clearing. Diverse people of different races and pasts worked together toward a common goal. The new village deep in the forest transformed like a living thing—growing, changing, and bustling with vitality day by day.
Wiping sweat from his brow, Akio watched it all unfold with a softened gaze. The challenge of forging iron, the future of this community—there was so much to do. But surrounded by reliable companions, the road ahead no longer felt lonely. That conviction gave Akio the strength to keep going.
