A Chance Encounter in the Forest and the Gifted Love Nest
The two women Akio had found near the forest's edge—Celestina and Leonora—were on the verge of death. As if finally reassured by Akio’s words, “I’m here to help,” Leonora let the sword slip from her weakening grip and lost consciousness entirely. Celestina, too, seemed to lack the strength even to respond to his voice.
"Alto! Hurry back to the cabin—bring Sylvia and Ayane! We’ll need medicine, and something we can use to carry them!"
Even before Akio had finished shouting, Alto was already dashing through the trees. The boy had clearly understood the gravity of the situation and carried with him the keen judgment and strong sense of duty he had cultivated living under Akio and Sylvia’s care.
Akio first loosened the straps of Leonora’s armor to ease her breathing. Her body was marked with countless cuts and bruises, evidence of a fierce battle. Celestina, while dressed in an ornate gown, bore the fatigue and injuries of a long struggle underneath the fabric.
(What happened to them…?)
As Akio administered basic first aid, Sylvia and Ayane soon arrived with Alto, panting from their run, carrying bundles of herbs, clean cloths, and thick blankets. The younger children trailed behind, worry etched on their faces.
Sylvia took one look at the women and her expression turned grim at the severity of their condition.
“Akio, these two are in danger. We must move them somewhere safe and begin treatment immediately, or they won’t survive.”
There was no hesitation in Sylvia’s voice. The mistrustful elf who had once doubted all humans was nowhere to be found. In her place stood a healer, filled with purpose and deep compassion fostered through her life with Akio and the children.
Ayane immediately began assisting Sylvia, cleansing wounds, wetting cloths to moisten the women’s lips, moving with a calm decisiveness that was already that of a capable young woman.
“Akio-san, if we don’t move them soon, they’ll lose too much heat,” Ayane urged.
Akio nodded. There was no need for discussion. The family’s resolve was unanimous—these women would be saved.
With great care, Akio and Alto lifted Celestina and Leonora into the cart they had brought for firewood. Following Sylvia’s guidance to minimize strain on their bodies, they transported the women back to the cabin. The younger children sensed the urgency and worked silently but diligently—carrying bundles of herbs, fetching fresh water, doing whatever they could.
Back at the cabin, Sylvia took the lead in treating the women. Ayane applied herb poultices to their wounds, gently coaxed down herbal tonic into weakened mouths. Her confident movements and dedication showed the maturity she had gained. But there was one issue—they lacked a place for the guests to rest. The family cabin was already full.
At that moment, Akio met Sylvia’s gaze. They didn’t need words. Their hearts were aligned.
“Sylvia… about the new annex…”
“Yes, Akio,” Sylvia said softly, continuing where he had trailed off. “Let’s use it. It’s almost finished. There, they’ll be able to rest peacefully.”
This annex—meant to be Akio and Sylvia’s private retreat, their love nest—was something they had both looked forward to with quiet anticipation. And yet, Sylvia’s face bore no trace of disappointment. She looked to Akio with a gentle pride and fondness.
“Our place… we can always build another one later—an even better one, together with everyone. What matters now is saving these lives.”
Ayane, listening quietly, nodded deeply. She, too, had thought of the annex as a symbol of Akio and Sylvia’s bond, but now understood that some things had to come first.
And so, Celestina and Leonora were brought into the nearly finished annex and given the best care the family could offer. The space was filled with the pleasant scent of new wood and Sylvia’s herbs. That night, Leonora briefly stirred awake and seemed to recognize Akio and the others keeping vigil over her—but soon slipped back into sleep. Celestina remained unconscious.
Sylvia stood by the window, gazing out at the moonlit forest. Akio came to her side.
“… Was it really the right choice? That was supposed to be our first space, just for the two of us…”
Sylvia shook her head gently. “Akio… your kindness is the part of you I love the most. And besides…”
She smiled mischievously and leaned against his arm.
“This has shown me something. I want a bigger house—one full of laughter and warmth. A home we can share not only with the children, but with new friends, too. And when that day comes… I’ll expect you to build us another place. A special one, just for the two of us to watch the stars.”
Her words were filled with unshakable love and hope for the future. Akio held her close and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead.
Their love nest may have been offered to others—but in doing so, Akio and Sylvia had taken the first step toward an even greater dream, one full of life, warmth, and shared love.
