The Vow at Fifteen and the Elf’s Guidance
As the last of the autumn foliage shone brightly and the air grew heavier with the scent of approaching winter, Ayane turned fifteen. In this world, fifteen marked the age of adulthood—an important milestone not just for the individual, but for their entire family. Akio and the others had quietly prepared a heartfelt celebration to honor the occasion.
That evening’s dinner was slightly more lavish than usual. There was herb-roasted venison, lovingly prepared by Akio, freshly baked nut bread from the newly completed oven that Ayane herself had made, and a special herbal tea—a revitalizing elven blend brewed by Sylvia just for Ayane. The cabin was decorated with colorful fallen leaves and berries gathered by the children, and the entire room glowed with warmth and quiet joy.
“Congratulations on becoming an adult, Ayane. Since we started living together, I can't begin to count how much you've helped—not just me, but the children too. Thank you. I’ll be relying on you even more from now on.”
Akio’s words were full of sincere gratitude. Alto, Kenta, Miko, and Yume chimed in with beaming smiles, “Congratulations, Ayane Neechan!” “Thanks for everything!”
Blushing, Ayane smiled and responded firmly, “Thank you all. I’ll do my best to be even more helpful from now on.”
But behind her joyful eyes, Sylvia alone noticed the flicker of something more—uncertainty about her newfound adulthood, anxiety for the future, and a tender, unspoken yearning she couldn’t voice.
After the celebration and once the children were peacefully asleep, Ayane approached Sylvia. “I’d like to talk… if you have a moment.”
The two of them sat down together in a quiet corner of the herb garden, bathed in soft moonlight.
“Sylvia-san… I know I’m fifteen now and that makes me an adult, but… honestly, I don’t really know what that means yet. I want to be someone like you and Akio-san—someone who truly supports this family. But sometimes, I feel like I’m still just a child who doesn't know enough or isn’t strong enough...”
Her voice trailed off, and then she added in a trembling whisper, “Akio-san… he’s really an incredible person. When I see how deeply he and you care for each other, it makes me happy. But… will I ever be someone who can support someone like that? Someone who can be truly loved, like you are…?”
Tears welled in her eyes. It was a confession of pure and earnest emotion—a mixture of admiration, insecurity, and a soft, budding affection.
Sylvia listened quietly to the end, then gently wrapped an arm around Ayane’s shoulders.
“Ayane… your honest heart is the most beautiful thing of all. Of course you feel unsure. I did too. Before I met Akio, I spent years alone—mistrusting, uncertain, closed off to the world.”
Her voice was deep and gentle, like the quiet forest at night.
“You already have the strength to support this family. Akio and I both trust you, and we love you deeply. Never forget that.”
Sylvia gently wiped Ayane’s tears, then, after a pause, continued carefully.
“… About Akio. I’ve sensed for a while now that he holds a special place in your heart. And perhaps… it’s too soon to define what that feeling truly is for either of you. But you should remember this.”
She met Ayane’s eyes directly, her gaze calm and steady.
“If one day you find that you truly love Akio—that you want to stand by his side, support him with all your heart—and if he accepts that love… then perhaps there’s a future where the two of us, together, support him as partners. Maybe this family will grow even bigger, and there will come a time when even more love and strength will be needed.”
Her words were astoundingly serene, full of warmth and a boundless kind of love.
“We are not rivals, Ayane, nor enemies. We are companions—kindred souls who love the same person. Together, hand in hand, we will protect and nurture Akio and this irreplaceable family. That, to me, is what a new kind of family could be—one that transcends race and past conventions. What do you think?”
Ayane looked up through her tears, eyes now gleaming with a new light, and nodded with conviction.
“Yes…! Thank you, Sylvia-san…!”
It wasn’t a vow made in jealousy or resignation. It was a promise—one born from the heart—between two women walking the same path toward the future.
Sylvia’s heartfelt words, filled with wisdom and hope, swept away the doubts clouding Ayane’s heart. With renewed purpose, Ayane took her first steps as an adult, now supported by the unwavering guidance of someone who truly understood her. Her clear, sincere spirit would surely bring new energy into the household, making the family’s future even brighter.
And as for Sylvia’s mention of a family that “might grow larger”… what did she truly mean by that?
As the final leaves fell from the trees and silence descended upon the forest, their story quietly yet surely stepped into its next chapter.
What do you think about this chapter?
Not liking the thought of that kind of age difference. It was sort of hinted earlier but I was hoping that it would go no where.
Agree... but i think what matters is she's of right age... in reality, most girls don't give a ton even if the guy is way way older than them
I'm not really surprised, I don't like it much either but we will just have to wait and see.
