The Call of the Forest and the Unknown Vein
As the relentless summer sun shone down and the forest's greenery grew even denser, a peaceful yet lively daily life surrounded Akio's cabin. The crops in the fields were growing steadily, and the children's laughter never ceased. Sylvia had completely blended in as a member of the family, and her knowledge of herbs had become indispensable to their lives. Yet, Akio never allowed himself to grow complacent with this stability—his mind was always fixed on what lay ahead.

"Everyone, gather around for a moment. There's something I want to discuss about the future," Akio announced one evening after dinner, addressing Sylvia and the children.

"The cabin has become quite comfortable now, but the kids are growing. Plus, we need a better place to store food safely. Winter will come again, after all."

Sylvia nodded quietly at his words. "It would also help to have a dedicated space for drying and mixing herbs. That way, we could produce much higher quality remedies."

Ayane added, "And I'd love to have sturdier dishes and cooking tools, too."

"For that, I think we need to find new materials," Akio proposed. "So here's my idea. Sylvia, Alto… how about the three of us spend a few days exploring the deeper parts of the forest? The areas we've never been to before?"

Alto's eyes sparkled. "Yes! I want to go! I want to help you and Sylvia-san!"

Sylvia pondered for a moment, then agreed under clear conditions. "It'll be a good opportunity for Alto to learn how to navigate the forest. But, we won't let you into dangerous areas, and you’ll follow our instructions without question."

Ayane looked slightly concerned but smiled bravely. "Leave Kenta, Miko, and Yume to me."

A few days later, at dawn, their preparations were complete. Akio, Sylvia, and a slightly nervous-looking Alto packed dried meat, nuts, water flasks, and only the most essential exploration tools. After bidding farewell to Ayane and the others, the three of them set off into the depths of the forest.

"Be careful, Akio-san. And Alto, listen to Sylvia-san," Ayane called out, her tone motherly, despite its bluntness, unable to hide the affection in her voice.

Their destination was a remote valley to the west of the cabin—an area even Sylvia rarely entered. Along the way, they encountered one unknown after another. Sylvia taught them without reserve, reading directions from the types of trees and moss, deducing animal activity from faint tracks.

"These red berries are poisonous. Birds can eat them, but they're harmful to humans."

"There might be a large snake lurking under that rock. Don’t get too close."

Alto listened intently, determined not to miss a single word. Akio, too, couldn't help but admire the elf's deep understanding of the forest.

On the second day of exploration, around midday, they stopped at a clearing by a mountain stream. Akio noticed the riverbed and soil along the banks possessed an unusual fine texture and stickiness.

"Sylvia, what do you make of this soil?"

Sylvia picked up a handful, kneading it between her fingers. Her eyes widened slightly.

"… This is high-quality clay, Akio. If we fire it properly, we could make very durable pottery. Or, sun-dried bricks for building walls…"

"Really?!" Akio's voice rose with excitement. With pottery, they could solve their food storage problems. With bricks, sturdier and more comfortable houses were within reach. They collected as many samples of the clay as they could carry.

The next day, deep within the thick forest, they discovered the entrance to a shadowy cave, half hidden by vegetation.

"This place… I've never seen it before. It could be the den of some beast. Stay alert," Sylvia cautioned.

Armed with wooden torches, the trio carefully made their way into the cave. The air inside was cool and damp, with only the sound of dripping water echoing around them.

Deeper in, they found parts of the cave walls discolored in a reddish-black hue over a wide area. Akio picked up a chunk of rock and, striking it with his stone axe, saw a dull metallic sheen in the exposed surface.

"This… could it be…?" Akio caught his breath. His knowledge from Earth told him this was likely iron ore.

Sylvia examined the rock with fascination. "It resembles the 'red rock' of ancient elf legends. They say you can melt it with fire and produce iron."

Deeper still, the cave walls glimmered faintly with veins of greenish-blue ore. It might be copper, tin, or another valuable metal.

If they could obtain iron, they could craft superior farming tools, knives, and building nails—tools far beyond what they currently possessed. This discovery had the potential to revolutionize their entire way of life.

Carrying samples of clay, iron ore, and other promising rocks, Akio, Sylvia, and Alto began their journey home, their hearts filled with excitement and hope.

"Akio-san, with this… we can make amazing things, right?!" Alto asked, eyes sparkling.

"Yeah, absolutely. But it won't be easy. This is where the real challenge begins," Akio replied with a smile.

Back at the cabin, Ayane and the children listened wide-eyed to their story, marveling at the unfamiliar soil and rocks.

New tools. Stronger homes. A richer, more abundant life. Akio and his family stood on the cusp of an exciting new chapter—illuminated by the hopeful discoveries hidden deep within the forest.
